ANI

ANI or Automatic Number Identification is a system to used by phone companies to identify the calling subscriber. ANI is like a caller id but it uses a different system. Unlike caller id which can be blocked by dialing a certain code the ANI is usually impossible to block.

ANI was used for billing purpose before but as of today it is used so that commercial subscribers could know who is calling them. This is also used in the 911 emergency service so that they will be able to identify who the caller is.
