If your place of business utilizes either a PBX or a PABX, you or your company’s telecommunications manager should contact the manufacturer of the PBX or PABX and the phone companies that provide you with local and long distance phone service to obtain information about the type of security systems available to protect your phone system from toll fraud. You may also ask about any monitoring services that help detect unusual phone system usage.
To avoid becoming a target of this scam, educate yourself and other employees about the 9-0-# scam. Have your employees get the following information :
- Get their name and telephone number.
- Inform the caller that you will call the phone company to see if there is a problem or not with the line.
- Hang up and do not dial any numbers of transfer the caller to an outside line.
- Call your phone service provider and report the suspicious phone call. Provide them with all the details of the call.
- Call your local law enforcement officials.
