Local Number Portability
Local Number Portability (LPN) allows the subscriber to retain their local phone number even if they switch to another phone service provider.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 requires it from the local exchange carriers (LEC) to provide this type of capability. The purpose for this is that it would remove the inconvenience of getting a new number every time the subscriber decides to change their local phone provider.
